Yet when we read about Flinders Petrie and Norman de Garis Davies, we rarely hear about their wives, Hilda and Nina, or how the work of Amelia Edwards helped to fund their explorations. Only through diaries, letters, and other archival discoveries have we come to realize how important these other partners were. Similarly, the contributions of Egyptians, such as Hassan Effendi Hosni, are only now coming to light.

Cuando está pronta su jubilación, Francisco Núñez Moreno siente el impuso de escribir unas memorias que reflejen el paso del mundo rural al mundo acomodado de la ciudad que ha protagonizado. Mientras pasea por el barrio de Salamanca y el parque del Retiro rememora la infancia en Periana, un pequeño y apartado pueblo de Montes de Málaga, donde nació y vivió sus primeros años bajo la protección del abuelo paterno, Rafael Núñez Chica, patriarca, alcalde, cacique y artífice del ascenso social de la familia Núñez. Recuerda el terremoto de Andalucía y la visita a Periana del rey Alfonso XII. La salida del pueblo para hacer el bachillerato en Málaga, y los años de Universidad en Madrid y Granada, con la guerra de Cuba y el desastre de 1898 como escenario de fondo. En el Ateneo de Madrid se relaciona con lo más granado de la intelectualidad española, manteniendo conversaciones con Joaquín Costa sobre el caciquismo rural y la corrupción del notariado. Como propietario del Gran Café de San Sebastián, en la madrileña calle Atocha, amplia sus relaciones sociales y económicas. Inicia la carrera de notario en 1909 en Alegría de Oria, donde se encuentra con el movimiento nacionalista de defensa del euskera. Tras pasar por Pradoluengo y Atienza, llega a Valencia, ciudad en la que establece un sistema de padrinazgo familiar que se alarga desde los últimos años de la Restauración, a la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, la II República y la Guerra Civil.

Libro amigable, bien documentado, con múltiples historias, personajes y referencias históricas, de fácil lectura, gracias a ágiles flashback.
